Matthew

Matthew also called Levi, was the writer of the first gospel. Matthew was a Jew who collected taxes for the Roman government. He was thus despised by the loyal Jews. Written for the Jews, the Gospel of Matthew presents Christ as the Son of David and the Son of Abraham. Because He is portrayed as King, His genealogy is trace to King David; and the place of His birth, Bethlehem, the home of David. Only in Matthew does Christ speak of "His Glorious Throne". Moreover, only here in the Gospels is Jerusalem referred to as "the holy city" and "the city of the Great King". Matthew more than any of the Gospel writers, identifies events and utterance in the life of our Lord with Old Testament predictions. Matthew may be divided as follows: 1. The King Introduced: His Genealogy, Birth, and Early Life, 2. The Sermon on the Mount, 3. The Authority of the King Manifested and Rejected, 4. The Ministry of the King, 5. The Ministry of the Rejected King, 6. The Predicted Return of the King, 7. The Death and Resurrection.
