Isaiah
Isaiah, whose name means salvation of the Lord, was the greatest of the writing prophets. He carried on his ministry in Judah during the reigns of four kings, possibly 740 to 680 B.C., a period of about sixty years during which Samaria was captured and Israel carried away, c. 722-721 B.C., and Judah was invaded by Sennacherib, 701 B.C. The themes of Isaiah's utterances reach back to the eternal counsels of God and the creation of the universe (e.g. 42:5) and look forward to the time when God will create new heavens and a new earth (65:17; 66:22). No other prophet has written with such majestic eloquence about the glory of god (see ch.40). All the nations of the earth come within the scope of Isaiah's predictions. Whereas there are in Isaiah many important prophecies concerning Jerusalem ( called more than thirty different names), as well as prophecies about Israel, Judah and the nations of the earth, the book sets forth the great Messianic predictions in which are foretold Christ's birth (7:14; 9:6), His Deity (9:6-7), His ministry (9:1-2; 42:1-7; 61;1-2). His death (52:1-53:12), His future millennial reign. Of all the O.T. prophets, Isaiah is the most comprehensive in range. No prophet is more full occupied with the redemptive work of Christ, In no other place, in the Scriptures written under the law, is there so clear a view of grace.
